The ravages of time had come for her much too soon
she realized as she stared into the gilded mirror
How could this be? Was it not only yesterday
that she could look into the cheval glass and see beauty
With eyes bright and wide that saw only the good in life
now they were sunken and hollow filled with only loneliness
Hair that had been the dark color of the richest earth
became ashen and gray no longer her crowning glory
What had become of a smooth and rosy complexion
the taut yet soft skin of her youth lost to the calendar
replaced by fine lines and a furrowed brow of worry
Try as she might she could not alter the reflection
gazing back at her to the days of young womanhood
So she put away the gilded mirror
and relied on her waning memory to remember her lost beauty
