Not His Fault

She knew it was a lie

when she told him

She loved him

The words were easy to utter

feeling the truth behind

was much harder

He was a fine man

a decent man

A man who deserved so much more

More than she was able

or  perhaps willing to bestow

It was through no fault of  his own

That she could not give him

that for which he longed

Not his fault that his eyes

were not that perfect shade of blue

Nor that  his touch was not the one

to make her weak with desire

It was not his song

that spoke to her heart

his confession of love to her

seemed out of tune

Nonetheless she would live out her days

in the arms of the mundane

while her heart lived in fantasy

of her one true love
